Dental Nurse and other health services for homeschoolers

Hi folks,

Could you let me know if you are interested in participating in the below?  I would plan on setting up a meeting in the new year to facilitate this.

Also, the dental nurse in Hokitika is running behind because of Covid.  She would usually do the homeschoolers in November, but this will now be happening next year.  She is trying to get through all the children in Year 8 before then, as they will graduate to the dentist next year.  If you have a Year 8 student that has not been contacted by Sue Allen, the dental nurse, and you would like them to see her, please contact Hokitika Primary School.

Have a great year end.
Kim

Kia ora Kim,

I've been given your contact details by Gaye Coates who suggested the Home educators network is something we need to reach out to.

I'm working with the DHB on a little project trying to listen to our communities to hear what supports they need in order to "Grow up well on the West Coast". We are looking specifically at services we either provide or fund for children in early years (0-5 years) but also beyond that.

We want to talk to speak to as many different groups of people/families as possible and we're keen to hear about the experiences of accessing (health services) for home educators on the Coast.

Do you have a regular meeting or event coming up that we could come along to over the next month or so that we can ask some questions but more importantly listen to stories from this community? We're keen to come to wherever the community are (across the whole Coast, Karamea to Haast) and wherever they are comfortable to share their stories and it doesn't necessarily need to be during normal business hours.

If you could send out some feelers and see if this is something people would be keen to do and then send me some dates/times I would be super grateful

Aku mihi nunui,

Fwd: 4 slots of Swim Classes in Greymouth on offer for Home educators.

Gidday there,

I've been contacted by pool staff in Greymouth in regards to swim lessons. The pool had maintenance last term & some large public school lessons have backed off for another term, but the pool plans to open for the new term in August. They have been taking extra measures such as increasing their water testing & frequently using watering cans to put more chlorine around the edges of the pool so that bugs should not be an issue at all.

So, Is anyone looking for a swim class for 6/7 year olds? The pool have us booked in a group slot at Thursday 11.00am, though at this point it looks likely to just be Koriniti. She is sitting around  Level 2 Advance, just needing to hold her back float for longer than 40 seconds & work on her rotation, then I guess she will be going to the next level - usually covered by public school swimming classes.

The pool are kindly open to having homeschoolers come in on group class fees even for one chilld and also have available slots:

Tuesday 10.00 am with Brenna

Thursday 10.00 am with  Brenna

There is also an open slot on Saturday morning, but I was uninterested in it & til I got the other slot details, was unaware of our swim-school classmates heading to school & not needing the class anymore.

As mentioned, we have bagsed the Thursday 11.00am swim class with Abby Murphy for anyone learning at level 2 or 6/7 year olds, and would love to have other people come join in.

A good thing to note is that in the past, the pool have made cost allowances for days that situations out of their control stopped lessons going forward.

(A wee tip for anyone with skin issues: The swim tutors all put coconut oil or olive oil on their skin as it puts a great natural barrier on your skin & especially on days when in the water for long periods of time, plus some families with eczema had have some relief by using it.)

Please contact Jo if interested in any of the available slots:

Fwd: HEART online - this weekend!

Soooo sorry this is so late.
Kim

Hello lovely home-schooling Mum! We're getting excited about hearing what our three lovely speakers have on their hearts to share this weekend!

Each screening will begin at 7.30pm.  We will post the link soon on both the HEART FB page and through email, so that you can pass it along to whoever you think might like to join us. All you need to do is...organize the children to be occupied in another room (perhaps a movie and bowl of popcorn?). You might like to light a candle, make your favourite hot drink and put on your comfy slippers.  Perhaps come prepared with your bible and notebook so that you can get the most out of HEART online.

Friday evening's session will bring Janice Wills' wisdom, encouragement and beautiful smile to your screen.

Saturday evening Sheena Harris will share nuggets and inspiration you are sure to glean so much from.

And on Sunday evening Rosie Boom will wrap up our weekend of insightful and encouraging sessions with her wonderful passion for spurring mothers on.

Fwd: HSNZ visits

Hi Folks.

In the midst of all that is going on, it can be hard to figure out just what commonsense now looks like.

Having thought about things, unless events spiral out of control in real ways, we are going ahead with the HSNZ visits as advertised. We would simply ask that we all take the following steps.

  1. Obviously, if anyone is ill, don't come.
  2. We will avoid physical touch.
  3. Although homeschooling families often bake great treats, let's not share any food that doesn't come straight out of a packet.
  4. We will cancel the shared meals where those were planned (but still have the meetings)

While we would really like to see as many people as possible, if individual families are still of the mind that getting together will compromise their family's health and choose to stay away, we will respect that.

Kind regards

Todd & Riety

Fwd: FAME Production at Greymouth High School Opportunity

My name is Katie Hanson, and I teach dance at Greymouth High School.

This year, GHS is putting on the production 'FAME the Musical'. The producers have decided to open up auditions to Homeschool kids, and JPII students to give them an equal opportunity to perform.

The general information I can give out at the moment is:
Auditions will be held at lunch-times (1.15-2pm) Tues, Wed, Thurs, 31st March, 1st Apr, and 2nd Apr.
Decision on casting will be made by Monday 6th April. At this point, the people chosen for roles will need to commit to our rehearsal schedule.

Rehearsals will be Tuesdays 3.30pm-5.30pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays 1.15-2pm every week beginning Tuesday 28th April until Fri 3rd July.
Then there's a week off.
The week beginning Monday 13th July will be 11am-5pm to get us running full acts, with stage crew (that's our school holidays, so we can take the longer time).
Rehearsals for the next three weeks would will be the same as previously, but with Tuesdays extended to 7.30pm.
Final run through is Friday 7th August from 12.15pm onwards
Technical rehearsal is Saturday 8th August
Dress rehearsal is Sunday 9th August.
Tuesday and Wednesday will be shortened primary school performances during the day.
Thursday 13th, Friday 14th, Saturday 15th nights are performance evenings, show starts 7pm
Sunday 16th Matinee starting 11.30am.

More details will be released when the Audition pack is ready, and I can forward that on.

There may be opportunities for dance only, and acting only support roles. Also, if someone is interested in backstage work, that could also be supported.

If you have any questions, comments, concerns, do just ask, I'm happy to answer/talk with you.

Kind regards,
Katie Hanson

Homeschool Meet

So the good news is that this get-together is coming up in a couple of weeks, on a Monday arvo. Bring yourself, the family, some food to share and any resources, curriculum, bits & pieces you think may be of use to other home educators & feel free to invite anyone you know that is considering the possibility of home education.

If you are selling something, please put a note on or beside it to make it clear what it is & how much you are hoping for.

I have heaps of alphabet and activity sheets that remain unused, to give away & I'm pretty sure I am not the only one with stuff that was helpful at some stage, but is now needing to find a new home.

There will be a shared afternoon tea & plenty of things to discuss, & friends made/visited I am sure! Amongst other things, Marion Digby-Smith's idea of Greymouth home edders going to the swimming pool once a term as a social event;
The possibilities of a home ed co-op & what could that look like? With sheets to register interest for each, & maybe a little bit of a Q&A session with friends & acquaintances who are thinking of trying out doing home ed.
If you are able, please note any Community resources, courses, events or anything that would be great to include in the run-down of such things that I hope to compile for everybody's use.
Plus any other ideas anyone has dreamed up or wondered about.

Hoping to see you there, I hope the year is starting off mostly smoothly for everyone,
sincerely, Elizabeth Trip.

Summary:
Date: 17th Feb
Time: 1.30pm
Venue: The Ark, 40 Richmond St, Cobden.  It's the hall of Cobden Anglican Church, situated just in beside it, up the 2nd ramp after you go in the gate.
Bring: yourself, the family, food, resources, curriculum, anyone interested in home educating
