Fwd: Summer Reading Challenge: Andy Wright's visit; Wednesday 9th December, 2015

Hello All,

I trust that this finds you well.

This is just to double-confirm the details for Wednesday 9th
December and the Summer Reading Challenge.

9.00am

Kaniere School

Kaniere School + Home Schooled Children(Double classroom)

Andy, Courtney Watson and I hope to arrive to schools at
least 5 minutes in advance of our allotted time.  The
schedule is quite tight, so can we gently ask that everyone
be assembled and ready for us please?  If you have any
difficulty with this, please just let me know.  We would
that a clear space at the top of the group be left clear for
us.

We will start with an introduction to Andy, Courtney and
myself.  This will be followed by an overview of library
services to children and young people and the Summer Reading
Challenge.  Finally, the bit everyone will be waiting
for....... Andy will take over and the mantle of the story
spellbound will be woven over us all.

The session will last approximately an hour in total.

I'm really looking forward to it - I hope that you are too!

Should you have any questions or queries please just let me
know.

Kind wishes,
Maire

Fwd: Calling all youth group leaders and educators wishing to add penguins to their activities

Hello!
I hope you already have a copy of the education resource launched by the West Coast Penguin Trust last year, but if not, please let me know and I'll get one to you ASAP!
In order to help you make the most of it, the resource author, Zoe Watson, will be leading a fun workshop, along with the Trust's Ranger, Reuben Lane, and you are invited.

Why not put it in your diary now?!  Thursday, 10th December.  Come along to St Mary's School at 3.30pm for some inspiration to share with the children you teach, lead and care for, as well as some delicious afternoon tea!

A flier is attached and copied below and we'd be grateful if you could pass this email on to anyone we may have missed who may be interested.

Please let me or Zoe know you'll be coming, so we can ensure we are prepared, particularly with afternoon tea!

We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you on 10th December, if not before.
Kind regards
Inger

PS If you can't make the 10th, but are keen to come, Zoe will also be running the workshop in Greymouth on Wednesday 9th December, at Grey Main School (Tech Centre, 3.30-5pm).  Again, please just let us know.

Homeschools, Great News!

You asked for it ...

You've told us that it's important for Homeschools to get easy access to online resources at a discounted price ... so we've changed our system for you!

Normally it would cost you $99 but now Homeschools can sign up to Artventure by themselves for just $34!! BUT this offer is not publicly available. Artventure relies on you to tell your friends.

How much fun are your kids are having with Artventure? How has their confidence in drawing has grown? Can they happily draw and paint without your help anymore?

Word of mouth is everything to Artventure, so please spread the word. Use this link in your blogs, your newsletters, your facebook posts, your twitter accounts ... where ever your Homeschool friends hang out!

Here it is, the golden ticket ...
http://learning.artventure.com.au/join-homeschool-referral.asp

Can I get this offer when my current licence expires?

Yes. All you have to do is login to your account when it expires, we have applied the discount for you. Don't use the above link because the system will see your address as a duplicate.

What happens when my Homeschool Group expires?

When your group expires, simply login as normal and choose:
A) "Renew as a Solo Homeschool", Paypal $34 and immediately continue as normal
B) Stay signed up with your Homeschool Group by contacting your admin person, pay that person and wait for everyone else to pay before continuing (in other words, option A is far easier!)

If you have any questions, please feel free to email mail@artventure.com.au

Have fun!!

MoE Accepting Applications from Age 5

Posted: 01 May 2015 03:34 AM PDT

This afternoon I receive and email from Lucy Ambrose from the National Office about the process of getting an exemption for our nearly 6 year olds. Lucy's email is about a policy change and is a direct result of the Scoping Survey that was done last year.

Hi Barbara and Meredith,

As you will remember, we agreed to look into the age that a child must be before parents can apply for a long-term exemption from enrolment. We have now reached an in-principle agreement that we will be able to accept applications following the child's fifth birthday (as opposed to the current six weeks before their sixth birthday).

The law remains the same, however – the exemption begins at the sixth birthday, but this change will allow the Ministry to process applications before these children are obliged to enrol in a school. This will reduce disruption to home education parents, students and schools.

This will take effect from 1 June 2015, absent major technical challenges.

We are having a hui with our regional home education staff on 11-12 May, and will brief them about this change. At this meeting, we also intend to train our staff in a range of home education philosophies, and the benefits of each.

We will also put a note on our website regarding this change.

Kind regards,

Fwd: Ministry of Education - Review report and Ministry work programme

Two things:

1.  NCHENZ newsletter.  They have asked me to pass this on.  I don't want to fill your inbox with junk, so let me know if this really isn't of interest to you.  I look mainly for the discounts!

2.  The government review of homeschooling - interesting!  This affects you, so make sure you have a look.  The first step is positive, by the looks.

Happy Homeschooling,
Kim

NCHENZ members will have the latest quarterly newsletter in their inbox. The newsletter outlines MOE and ERO news, and the most recent discount available to NCHENZ members which is 30% off LEARNZ virtual field trips.

If you are a NCHENZ member and haven't received the newsletter then it's likely that you need to update your details with us (first check your spam folder though). In that case it's good timing as we are asking all members to update their details and confirm their membership.

To update your details with NCHENZ please use this form: http://www.nchenz.org.nz/update-details-existing-members-only/

Dear Home Educating Parent

The Ministry of Education has recently completed its review of home education in New Zealand which we consulted with you on in September 2014. We have now developed a work programme for change which includes a number of operational improvements.

As well as consulting with you, we also sought feedback from Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (the Correspondence School) and the Education Review Office (ERO) as well as Ministry of Education staff. We used the feedback from throughout the sector to inform our decisions and actions to improve home education in New Zealand.

You can find a copy of the review report at:

http://www.minedu.govt.nz/Parents/AllAges/EducationInNZ/Homeschooling.aspx

The report contains the Ministry's future work programme for home education as an appendix and includes dates about when particular changes are scheduled to take place.

These changes are mainly focused on operational improvements including:

·         Reviewing the application form and appeal and complaints process

·         Developing new practice guidelines

·         Training ministry advisors in home education philosophies

·         Implementing a more robust application assessment process (in particular regarding declining applications)

We have also made some immediate improvements based on your feedback. For example the Statutory Declarations will no longer need to be signed by a Justice of the Peace which will take effect 1 April 2015.

If you have any questions or feedback, please email home.schooling@minedu.govt.nz.

Kind Regards,

Jim Greening

Mandarin and Confucius Institute Opening

Hi there,

Tai Poutini Polytechnic is opening a Confucius Institute at University of Canterbury Resource Centre at TPP on Wednesday (25th) next week.  There will be a business workshop at 1:30.  An opening ceremony will be held at 3:05 followed by afternoon tea and cultural activities including Chinese calligraphy, paper-cutting, Chinese painting and tea art demonstration.

The invitation to the opening is open, but RSVPs to mandarin@tpp.ac.nz would be appreciated to inform catering for afternoon tea.

The Mandarin tutor will arrive early March and details of availability for teaching Mandarin to home educators will be available shortly.  It would be helpful to get an idea of demand to see if we need to split classes between Greymouth and Hokitika and/or between age groups.

NCHENZ Survey – please consider filling it out

Posted: 15 Feb 2015 01:32 PM PST

From NCHENZ – National Council of New Zealand

The NCHENZ would like to hear from all Home Educators not just members.

The 2015 Home Education Survey

February 2015

As you may remember we ran our first Home Education survey in November 2013.  We chose to do this because there were very few studies of home education carried out in New Zealand and therefore very little understanding of the breadth and depth of the community.  This continues to be the case. (From HEF: The Home Education Foundation via TEACH Bulletin did a few survey's back in the '80s and '90s but there have been none in the last 15 or so years except for NCHENZ's survey back in 2013.)

We are once again hoping to gain a good overview of our existing NCHENZ members; your aims, your concerns and, of course, some basic statistics.
The gathered results may be used to promote the positive aspects of home education, as well as to dispel any myths or misunderstandings held by others in the wider community.  It also informs the direction and issues the NCHENZ committee address within our advocacy role.

Please note that this survey is anonymous.  We are not collecting any identifiable information about respondents with one specific exception which will become clear when you reach the end of the survey.  In this instance it is totally voluntary to answer this question.
Individual responses within the survey will not be shared.  Collated information can and may be shared.  Please see how the 2013 information has been handled by clicking on this link to the Survey Summary pdf file.

As you are not identifiable, we ask that you respect the intent of the survey, and fill it in as accurately and fairly as possible.
The survey should take you approximately five to ten minutes to complete and, hopefully, the questions are self-explanatory.  Please complete it at one sitting as it is not possible to return to alter your responses should you exit part way through. The survey will be available until 7pm on the 22nd February, after which time we will be closing it to further entries.

You are welcome to forward this email on to home educating friends who are not currently members of NCHENZ for them to contribute to the survey.  There is a link at the bottom of this email that allows you to do this.

If you have any questions regarding the survey, please feel free to contact us by email.

On behalf of the National Council of Home Educators New Zealand,

NCHENZ Executive Committee

In the early days of Home Education in New Zealand Craig organised a number of surveys through Keystone and TEACH Bulletin. It was good to get as many home educators as possible to answer the surveys. These surveys were very helpful.

I don't think any surveys have been done for at least 15 years now except for the NCHENZ 2013 survey.

There have been a couple of indepth studies done in the last 10 years.

Beyond Homeschooling NZ 2013 by Jenny Barkley

and

PhD study on Home Education in New Zealand

It would be wonderful if as many people as possible filled out this anonymous survey being done by NCHENZ.

TEACH magazine surveys are not online at the moment

awesome.

we will have one hour in a interactive session with
policeman Josh
then we will have one hour at cass square on the bikes
learning some skills
we will probably then have lunch so bring your own
after lunch the older ones will head out on the roads around
cass square
Yes it is still happening if its raining.  We have access to
Hokitika Church of Christ, so can have lunch there.  I will
provide tea and coffee etc and cold water.
while the big kids are out on the rd the littles can be at
the church or at cass square playing.
parents have full responsibility for their child/ren at all
times.  We need as many adults as possible, especially with
big ones on rd, you may be asked to stand on a corner.
there are some bikes available. if you have a bike bring it
or let me now if you need a bike, just makes sure the brakes
work!! every child should have a helmet.
the focus is more school age up to younger teenagers. any

Scholastic book club

Hello everyone,

For those who haven't heard, I have taken over doing the Scholastic Book Club orders from Kerstin.

The first lot of booklets for 2015 have just arrived and are ready to send out to anyone who may want to order books.
They have made some changes for this year, so instead of getting lots of smaller booklets, Lucky, Arrow, Star, etc, they are all combined into one booklet.

Currently I have only myself and one other person on my list of people who receive them.
But I thought there surely should be others who are interested in buying books too..
So if anyone would like to buy Scholastic book club books, please let me know and I will send you a booklet.
Or if you want some more information, I'm happy to help.

Or leave a comment

Look forward to hearing from you,
Cheers,
Tracey.
