Fwd: Summer Reading Challenge: Andy Wright's visit; Wednesday 9th December, 2015
Hello All,
I trust that this finds you well.
This is just to double-confirm the details for Wednesday 9th
December and the Summer Reading Challenge.
9.00am
Kaniere School
Kaniere School + Home Schooled Children(Double classroom)
Andy, Courtney Watson and I hope to arrive to schools at
least 5 minutes in advance of our allotted time. The
schedule is quite tight, so can we gently ask that everyone
be assembled and ready for us please? If you have any
difficulty with this, please just let me know. We would
that a clear space at the top of the group be left clear for
us.
We will start with an introduction to Andy, Courtney and
myself. This will be followed by an overview of library
services to children and young people and the Summer Reading
Challenge. Finally, the bit everyone will be waiting
for....... Andy will take over and the mantle of the story
spellbound will be woven over us all.
The session will last approximately an hour in total.
I'm really looking forward to it - I hope that you are too!
Should you have any questions or queries please just let me
know.
Kind wishes,
Maire

MoE Accepting Applications from Age 5
Posted: 01 May 2015 03:34 AM PDT
This afternoon I receive and email from Lucy Ambrose from the National Office about the process of getting an exemption for our nearly 6 year olds. Lucy's email is about a policy change and is a direct result of the Scoping Survey that was done last year.
Hi Barbara and Meredith,
As you will remember, we agreed to look into the age that a child must be before parents can apply for a long-term exemption from enrolment. We have now reached an in-principle agreement that we will be able to accept applications following the child's fifth birthday (as opposed to the current six weeks before their sixth birthday).
The law remains the same, however – the exemption begins at the sixth birthday, but this change will allow the Ministry to process applications before these children are obliged to enrol in a school. This will reduce disruption to home education parents, students and schools.
This will take effect from 1 June 2015, absent major technical challenges.
We are having a hui with our regional home education staff on 11-12 May, and will brief them about this change. At this meeting, we also intend to train our staff in a range of home education philosophies, and the benefits of each.
We will also put a note on our website regarding this change.
Kind regards,
Lucy Ambrose-Segetin | Senior Advisor | Learner Engagement

Fwd: Ministry of Education - Review report and Ministry work programme
From: Home Schooling <Home.Schooling@minedu.govt.nz>

Subject: Ministry of Education - Review report and Ministry work programme
To: Home Schooling <Home.Schooling@minedu.govt.nz>
Dear Home Educating Parent
The Ministry of Education has recently completed its review of home education in New Zealand which we consulted with you on in September 2014. We have now developed a work programme for change which includes a number of operational improvements.
As well as consulting with you, we also sought feedback from Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (the Correspondence School) and the Education Review Office (ERO) as well as Ministry of Education staff. We used the feedback from throughout the sector to inform our decisions and actions to improve home education in New Zealand.
You can find a copy of the review report at:
http://www.minedu.govt.nz/Parents/AllAges/EducationInNZ/Homeschooling.aspx
The report contains the Ministry's future work programme for home education as an appendix and includes dates about when particular changes are scheduled to take place.
These changes are mainly focused on operational improvements including:
· Reviewing the application form and appeal and complaints process
· Developing new practice guidelines
· Training ministry advisors in home education philosophies
· Implementing a more robust application assessment process (in particular regarding declining applications)
We have also made some immediate improvements based on your feedback. For example the Statutory Declarations will no longer need to be signed by a Justice of the Peace which will take effect 1 April 2015.
If you have any questions or feedback, please email home.schooling@minedu.govt.nz.
Kind Regards,
Jim Greening

NCHENZ Survey – please consider filling it out Posted: 15 Feb 2015 01:32 PM PST From NCHENZ – National Council of New Zealand The NCHENZ would like to hear from all Home Educators not just members. The 2015 Home Education SurveyFebruary 2015As you may remember we ran our first Home Education survey in November 2013. We chose to do this because there were very few studies of home education carried out in New Zealand and therefore very little understanding of the breadth and depth of the community. This continues to be the case. (From HEF: The Home Education Foundation via TEACH Bulletin did a few survey's back in the '80s and '90s but there have been none in the last 15 or so years except for NCHENZ's survey back in 2013.) We are once again hoping to gain a good overview of our existing NCHENZ members; your aims, your concerns and, of course, some basic statistics. Please note that this survey is anonymous. We are not collecting any identifiable information about respondents with one specific exception which will become clear when you reach the end of the survey. In this instance it is totally voluntary to answer this question. As you are not identifiable, we ask that you respect the intent of the survey, and fill it in as accurately and fairly as possible. You are welcome to forward this email on to home educating friends who are not currently members of NCHENZ for them to contribute to the survey. There is a link at the bottom of this email that allows you to do this. If you have any questions regarding the survey, please feel free to contact us by email. On behalf of the National Council of Home Educators New Zealand, NCHENZ Executive Committee In the early days of Home Education in New Zealand Craig organised a number of surveys through Keystone and TEACH Bulletin. It was good to get as many home educators as possible to answer the surveys. These surveys were very helpful. I don't think any surveys have been done for at least 15 years now except for the NCHENZ 2013 survey. There have been a couple of indepth studies done in the last 10 years.
It would be wonderful if as many people as possible filled out this anonymous survey being done by NCHENZ. TEACH magazine surveys are not online at the moment ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please share this information – thanks ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Updated 1 October 2014: Three years on (Craig Smith's Health) page 7 click here ***** Needing help for your home schooling journey: http://hef.org.nz/2011/needing-help-for-your-home-schooling-journey-2/ And Here are a couple of links to get you started home schooling: Information on getting started: http://hef.org.nz/getting-started-2/ and Information on getting an exemption: http://hef.org.nz/exemptions/ This link is motivational: http://hef.org.nz/2012/home-schooling-what-is-it-all-about/ Exemption Form online: http://hef.org.nz/2012/home-schooling-exemption-form-now-online/ Coming Events: http://hef.org.nz/2013/some-coming-events-for-home-education-during-2013-2/ Red Tape Cluster Buster Meetings and the Scoping Survey: http://hef.org.nz/2014/next-steps-deadline-8-december-2014/ |

Scholastic book club
Hello everyone,For those who haven't heard, I have taken over doing the Scholastic Book Club orders from Kerstin. The first lot of booklets for 2015 have just arrived and are ready to send out to anyone who may want to order books. They have made some changes for this year, so instead of getting lots of smaller booklets, Lucky, Arrow, Star, etc, they are all combined into one booklet.Currently I have only myself and one other person on my list of people who receive them. But I thought there surely should be others who are interested in buying books too..So if anyone would like to buy Scholastic book club books, please let me know and I will send you a booklet.Or if you want some more information, I'm happy to help.Phone: (03) 7625172Or leave a commentLook forward to hearing from you,Cheers,Tracey.
