The West Coast Penguin Trust

is delighted to invite you

to the launch of its

West Coast Penguin and Seabird Education Resource

When: 2.00pm. Friday 28th November

Where: Kaniere School, 16 Camp Street, Kaniere

The Trust has been developing the education resource over the past couple of years and would

like to share and celebrate its launch with you!

Through tailor-made, fun, educational projects written especially for the West Coast, the new

resource enables teachers and youth leaders to take children on a voyage of discovery as they learn

about penguins and penguin habitat on the Coast, consider and take actions to help penguins, and

then celebrate and share their projects.

Hokitika based primary school teacher and environmental educator, Zoe Watson, has written the

material, which focusses on the ever popular blue penguin and provides information and activities

relating to the Coast's other seabirds.

Kaniere School teacher, Kristine Hickford, has provided advice along the way and is kindly providing

the space and her class to join in with the launch.

Come and join the Trust and the school children to celebrate with afternoon tea

The West Coast Penguin Trust has created an education resource with activities for children roughly in the 5-9 years age range and we're about to launch it!  First of all, we'd like to invite you to our launch next Friday at Kaniere School (see invitation attached) and secondly, I'd like to post a copy of the resource to you and to other home school coordinators on the coast and wondered if you could let me have your and other coordinator addresses please.

The resource will also be available on line on our website by next Friday so all home school parents will be able to access it.

After the super success of the South Island Life Learners camp 2014 where approx 20 families from all over the South Island came together, and had a super time, we kick into gear for 2015!!!

Families were very positive about the venue - safe, fenced, plenty of free space.  We all enjoyed hanging together, sharing ideas, supporting each other and having a great time.

Details of the competition are below. —————————————————————————————— Good afternoon, The College of Business and Law invites your students to enter our 2014 UC Business and Law Essay Competition. It's election year so the essay topics are based on examining political parties' policies on issues affecting the economy, employment, taxation and the justice system. There are some great cash prizes for your students and your school. Each category will have three placement prizes. ·        1st Prize: $400 for your student and $150 for your school ·        2nd Prize: $200 for your student and $150 for your school ·        3rd Prize: $150 for your student and $150 for your school What do students need to do? Hi West Coast Home Educators,

I would just like everyone to know we have this great Adventure Farm Stay
that they can bring their kids to for a whole lot of new fun exciting hands on
learning experiences.

I'm Uncle Dave married to Aunty Nikki
when I was growing up I used to go to a friends farm where we had all sort
of fun adventures, so now we are full time farming and our kids are growing up
we've opened up our farm and developed a cottage & cabin so families can come
enjoy our farm.


Guests often say I'm pretty good at relating to all ages of kids and giving them
the confidence to try new things. Teaching must be in the blood.

Exciting Dates From Rose

AFTERNOON TEA for Home Educators, especially for NEW or INTENDING Home Educators or people new to the area, mainly to meet up and maybe share ideas, curriculums used, etc.  Bring a plate if it suits, don't worry if it doesn't.  "Older" HEs very welcome also.

This will be at 2pm at Rose's on MONDAY, 9 JUNE.

ALSO:

Quite separately from home educating, I am presently involved in bring Warwick Pascoe and his educational presentation- The Making of a Masterpiece-to the West Coast.  He plans to be here on 28/29 July and I don't see why we Home Educator's should miss out!  He takes us on an amazing hour-long animated journey from birth back to conception in an interactive, humorous way, and having seen him in action, I can definitely recommend it and can also assure everyone that it is quite suitable for all ages and quite non-controversial.  Will let you know more when detais are finalised but mark those dates.  Will probably be OUTSIDE school hours.  You can look it up on www.masterpiece.org.nz.

ALSO:

My apologies for Project Day not happening last year - time just seemed to get out of hand.  So have decided to get in early this year and am looking tentatively at THURSDAY, 3 JULY at KAIATA HALL, GREYMOUTH AREA.  If some thing comes up, or there is illness around, we might look at shifting it 

to the beginning of the 3rd term.  For all of you  who know about Project Day, start preparing or dusting up your projects and practise doing speeches

to your families.  Can be about something you have studied, or are interested in or are expert at or maybe tell about somewhere you have been.  I was thinking that this year we should have a cultural theme for the shared lunch, prepared by the children if possible, for something different.  Maybe if everyone could make something that reflected their ethnicity?

I still haven't sorted out an afternoon activity yet so welcome any ideas please or maybe we could look at going to the Aquatic Centre?

ALSO:

If anyone is interested in joining in with part or all of a Ski Week with the Correspondence School Parent's Association Canterbury Branch -NB - You do not have to be doing Correspondence- let me know and I can send you details.  The week starts 11 August, will be in Cardrona, Treble Cone area and they are a nice bunch of people to be away with.  Skiing is very expensive but this group manage to get really good deals, being educational!  If you are keen, let me know sooner rather than later as they need to book accommodation especially.

HELLO EVERYONE,

My apologies for such short notice but I thought we had better run with this while this wonderful weather is holding and before it starts getting too cold.

So for the details:

WHERE: LAKE MAHINAPUA DOC CAMPING GROUND (just south of Hokitika for any new people)

WHEN: This Wed, Thurs and Fri - 9th, 10th and 11 April.

TIME: If we arrive and set up on Wed morning and can get started after lunch would be good.

We will finish up and pack up again after lunch on Friday.

WHAT IF? You haven't got a tent, like your own bed too much or have other appointments?

Feel free to turn up to activities whenever it suits you.

COST: It costs $6 per night for adults and $3 per night for schoolage children, (Age below 5 are free) to camp the night and fees are paid into the supplied honesty box, so it is handy to have the right cash available.

No fee if you are not staying the night

WHAT TO BRING? Bring all your own food, clothing and camping gear. If you have bikes or boats - and can fit them in! - bring them along but not essential.
